In Circulation
In Circulation is a documentary photography project exploring Portobello Road Market as a place where objects, people, and cultures are constantly in motion. Beyond its role as one of London’s best-known antique markets, Portobello is approached as a living archive where histories are exchanged alongside everyday goods. Through photographs of traders, visitors, antiques, gestures, and fleeting encounters, the project reflects on how value is continually enriched, transformed, and passed from one person to another, gathering new stories along the way.
Rather than documenting the market as a fixed place, the work observes the many forms of circulation that sustain it. Objects change hands, conversations unfold between strangers, traditions are passed on, and fragments of cultural memory emerge through everyday encounters. In this constant movement, antiques become more than commodities: each exchange adds another layer to their history, connecting different people, places, and generations.
Shot on 35mm analogue film, the project embraces a slower, more attentive way of looking that echoes the tactile character of the market itself. Grain, colour, and the physical qualities of film reinforce an interest in materiality while encouraging close observation of the gestures, relationships, and overlooked moments through which exchange becomes visible.
The project extends beyond the photographs themselves. Alongside the exhibition, members of the Portobello community are invited to share a personal memory of the market—perhaps an object once bought or sold, a chance encounter, or a moment that has remained vivid over the years. While markets keep objects alive through exchange, memories remain alive through being shared. Together, these contributions invite visitors to discover Portobello not only through the things that pass through it, but through the stories they carry with them.
Upcoming Exhibition
In Circulation: An Exchange of Memories
I am delighted to present the first solo exhibition of In Circulation, taking place at J/M Gallery from 22–28 July 2026.
Bringing together photographs made over two years at Portobello Road Market, the exhibition explores how objects, people, and memories continually shape one another through exchange. Visitors will also be invited to contribute a personal memory of Portobello Road Market, becoming part of a growing archive of stories that evolves throughout the exhibition.
I look forward to welcoming you!
